Can East London children apply to Essex CSSE grammar schools?
Quick answer
Yes. Children from East London can register for the CSSE 11+ and name CSSE schools on their own council's application form. But each school sets its own admissions policy, and many give priority to local children. For example, KEGS Chelmsford gives its first 120 places to boys within 12.5 miles. CSSE offers need a score of at least 303.
Families in Barking, Dagenham and Ilford sometimes look beyond Redbridge to the Essex grammar schools, especially if their postcode is outside the Redbridge 11+ catchment. Here is what the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) actually says, and what to check before you put your child forward.
What is the CSSE?
The CSSE is a group of ten schools in Essex that share one 11+ test for their selective places. The member schools are listed on the CSSE website, with locations from the CSSE Information Guide 2027 Entry:
| School | Area |
|---|---|
| King Edward VI Grammar School (KEGS) | Chelmsford |
| Colchester County High School for Girls | Colchester |
| Colchester Royal Grammar School | Colchester |
| Southend High School for Girls | Southend-on-Sea |
| Southend High School for Boys | Southend-on-Sea |
| Westcliff High School for Girls | Westcliff-on-Sea |
| Westcliff High School for Boys | Westcliff-on-Sea |
| St Bernard's High School (girls) | Westcliff-on-Sea |
| St Thomas More High School (boys) | Westcliff-on-Sea |
| Shoeburyness High School (a mixed comprehensive in the consortium) | Shoeburyness |
These are not the same as the Redbridge grammar schools, Ilford County High and Woodford County High, which have their own test. See our Redbridge 11+ dates guide for that one.
Can a child who lives in London apply?
Yes, you can apply from London. The CSSE Information Guide 2027 Entry says parents must use the application form of the local authority where they live, even if the schools they name are in a different authority.
So a Barking family applies through Barking and Dagenham's online system, and a Redbridge family through Redbridge. You name the CSSE schools as preferences alongside any London schools.
You must do two separate things:
- Register your child for the CSSE test with CSSE, in Year 5.
- Name the CSSE school(s) on your home council's secondary application by 31 October in Year 6.
CSSE is clear that registering for the test alone is not an application for a place.
Will my child actually get a place if we live in London?
It depends on the school, and for some schools it is much harder from outside the area. CSSE tells parents to read each school's own admissions policy, because each school decides how it ranks children.
For example, King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford has a priority area of 12.5 miles from the school. The first 120 places go to the highest-scoring boys who live within that area from 10 October of Year 6. The remaining places go to the highest scorers regardless of where they live.
Other CSSE schools have their own rules, so the chances for a London child can be very different from one school to the next. Read the admissions policy on each school's website before you apply, and check the distance from your home.
What is the minimum score?
CSSE offers are not made to any child with a total standardised score under 303, according to the CSSE Information Guide 2027 Entry. Places won on appeal and places under special considerations are outside this rule.
CSSE also publishes a guidance sheet with historical scores on results day, to help parents decide where to apply. It warns that past scores are no guarantee, and that actual cut-offs are only known after offer day in March.
What were the CSSE dates for 2027 entry?
Registration and the test have already happened for 2027 entry. Here are the dates from the CSSE Information Guide 2027 Entry.
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration opened | 12 May 2026 |
| Registration deadline | 19 June 2026 |
| Test centre details emailed | By 15 July 2026 |
| 11+ test | Saturday 19 September 2026 |
| Alternative date (religious reasons, illness, exceptional cases) | Tuesday 29 September 2026 |
| Results emailed | After close of business on 12 October 2026 |
| Secondary application deadline | 31 October 2026 |
| National Offer Day | 1 March 2027 |
For 2028 entry, the CSSE website says important dates will be published by Easter 2027. Check back then.
What is in the CSSE test?
The CSSE test has two papers: English and Maths. The English paper lasts 60 minutes with 10 minutes extra reading time, and the Maths paper lasts 60 minutes, according to the CSSE website. There are no separate verbal or non-verbal reasoning papers, unlike the Redbridge test.
CSSE publishes real past papers with mark schemes for free on its practice material page. See our list of free 11+ practice papers for more.
Where does my child sit the test?
At one of the CSSE schools in Essex. When registering, you nominate one CSSE school as the test centre. If a centre is full, CSSE may allocate a different one. That means a journey into Essex on a Saturday morning, so plan your route.
The guide also says the Tuesday date will not be offered just because of a clash with another authority's test. The Redbridge test (Friday 18 September 2026) and the CSSE test (Saturday 19 September 2026) fell on different days for 2027 entry, but check both calendars each year if you are entering for both.
Should we try both the Redbridge and Essex tests?
Some families do, but think about it carefully. Ask yourself:
- Is the daily journey realistic? Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend are a long way from Barking for an 11-year-old, five days a week.
- Does your child have a real chance under that school's admissions policy? Read the priority area rules first.
- Can your child prepare for two different formats? The Redbridge test includes reasoning; the CSSE test does not.
If your address is outside the Redbridge catchment, check our Barking catchment guide and consider strong local schools as well.

Questions parents ask
- Do I apply to CSSE schools through Essex County Council?
- Not if you live in London. CSSE says you must use the application form of the local authority where you live, even when naming schools in another authority.
- Can CSSE papers be re-marked?
- No. CSSE schools have a joint policy not to re-mark test papers, and scores are not adjusted for circumstances. You can raise circumstances at an independent appeal after offer day.
- How old must my child be to sit the CSSE test?
- For 2027 entry, CSSE says children should be in Year 6 from September 2026, with a date of birth between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016. Separate rules cover under-age and over-age entry.
- Is there help for pupil premium children?
- CSSE schools have special considerations for pupil premium children, using a form sent to each school. CSSE also offers free Atom Learning access for eligible children.
