GCSE & KS3 · Years 7–11
GCSE tutoring in Barking and East London, taught to your child's exam board
Quick answer
LCB offers small-group GCSE and KS3 tutoring for Years 7–11 in Maths, Science and English. Groups of 3–5 meet at our Barking centre or online, with the same tutor every week. Lessons follow your child's exam board, such as AQA, Edexcel or OCR. Plans start at £52 a month.
Who is GCSE tutoring for?
Our GCSE groups are for students in Years 7 to 11 who want better grades in Maths, Science or English. Some are aiming for a grade 4 pass. Others want 7s, 8s and 9s for a selective sixth form.
Most of our students live in Barking, Dagenham, Ilford and East Ham. Many join online from further away.
Why does the exam board matter?
Each exam board writes its own papers, so the style of questions can differ. The boards most families in East London will meet are AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR.
Schools near us do not all use the same board. For example, Barking Abbey School lists AQA for GCSE Maths. Another school may choose Edexcel.
At the free assessment we ask which board your child is studying. Then we teach to that board's topics and practise with its style of past paper. Read AQA vs Edexcel GCSE Maths to see how they compare.
How is Years 7–9 different from Years 10–11?
Years 7–9 are about strong foundations, while Years 10–11 are about exam preparation.
| Years 7–9 (KS3) | Years 10–11 (GCSE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Secure the basics and close gaps early | Master the specification and exam technique |
| Maths | Number, algebra, fractions, problem solving | Full GCSE topics, higher or foundation tier |
| Science | Core ideas in Biology, Chemistry and Physics | Combined or triple science content and required practicals |
| English | Reading, writing and vocabulary | Set texts, language papers, timed essays |
| Practice | Short topic tests | Past papers, mocks and mark schemes |
| Typical plan | Essential or Progress | Progress or Exam Ready |

How do small groups work?
Each group has 3 to 5 students working at a similar level. The tutor explains a topic, then students practise while the tutor checks each one's work.
Small groups give your child individual attention without the cost of one-to-one. Students also learn by hearing others ask questions. Read group tutoring vs one-to-one for an honest comparison.
Your child has the same tutor every week. That tutor gets to know exactly where they need help.
What does a month of GCSE tutoring look like?
A typical month follows a simple pattern.
- Week 1: a new topic, chosen from the gaps found in the assessment or recent school tests.
- Weeks 2–3: practice with exam-style questions from your child's board.
- Week 4: a short timed check to see what has stuck.
- End of month: you get a progress report with what went well and what comes next.
Each weekly slot gives 4 lessons a month. In Year 11 we add more full past papers, especially before mocks. Our Year 11 revision timetable shows how to plan the run-up to exams.

- "Both my kids improved — one went from 4s to 7s across the board." Shabana K., Barking

Questions parents ask
- Can you help with GCSE Science if my child does triple science?
- Yes. We teach both combined and triple science, following your child's exam board. Our guide to combined vs triple science explains the difference.
- Is it too late to start in Year 11?
- No. Many students join in Year 11, often after mocks. With less time, we focus on the topics that will gain the most marks.
- Do you teach foundation and higher tier Maths?
- Yes. We place your child in a group at the right level after the assessment, and help them move up a tier if that is realistic.
- Can my child study two subjects?
- Yes. The Progress plan covers up to 2 subjects and Exam Ready covers up to 3. You can switch plans from one month to the next.
