Maths tuition · Years 4–13
Maths tutor in Barking for 11+, GCSE and A-Level
Quick answer
LCB Tutors teaches Maths from 11+ (Years 4–6) to A-Level (Years 12–13) in small groups of 3–5, at our Barking centre or live online. Lessons follow your child's exam board, with the same tutor every week. Plans start at £52 a month for 11+ and GCSE, or £72 for A-Level.
What does a Maths tutor at LCB actually do?
We find the gaps in your child's Maths, fill them, and then practise the exact style of questions their exam will ask. Every student starts with a free 30-minute assessment. We look at what they can and cannot do yet, agree a target grade, and place them in a small group of 3–5 students at the right level.
Lessons are taught by the same tutor every week. You get a progress report each month, so you always know what has been covered and what comes next.
What do we cover at each level?
The short answer: everything on your child's syllabus, in the order that makes sense for them.
| Level | Years | What we cover | How it is examined |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11+ | 4–6 | Arithmetic, fractions, ratio, problem solving, plus non-verbal reasoning | Redbridge 11+: a Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning paper, alongside an English and Verbal Reasoning paper |
| KS3 | 7–9 | Number, algebra, geometry and statistics foundations; closing gaps from primary school | School tests (no national exam) |
| GCSE | 10–11 | Number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability, statistics | Three papers; one non-calculator, two calculator |
| A-Level | 12–13 | Pure maths (proof, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, vectors), mechanics and statistics | Three papers of 2 hours each with AQA |
For the Redbridge 11+, the test for 2027 entry was held on 18 September 2026, with registration in Year 5. See our 11+ tutoring page and our guide on when to start 11+ preparation.
How is GCSE Maths examined?
GCSE Maths has two tiers, and the tier decides the top grade your child can get. With AQA, for example, there is a Foundation tier (grades 1–5) and a Higher tier (grades 4–9). There are three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each. Paper 1 is non-calculator; Papers 2 and 3 allow a calculator.
Many students sit on the edge between tiers. Part of our job is helping you and the school decide which tier gives your child the best chance. Read more on our GCSE tutoring page, or in our guides to moving from grade 4 to grade 7 and how grade boundaries work.
Which exam boards do you teach?
We teach to whichever board your child's school uses. Most schools in East London use AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR for GCSE Maths. The topics are very similar, but the question styles and the way marks are given are not.
That matters. A student who has only practised one board's papers can be thrown by another board's wording. We use past papers and mark schemes from your child's own board. If you are not sure which board your child's school uses, ask their Maths teacher or check the school website. Our article on AQA vs Edexcel GCSE Maths explains the differences.
Why is A-Level Maths such a big jump?
A-Level Maths moves fast and expects strong algebra from day one. The AQA course, for example, has three equally weighted 2-hour papers: one on pure maths, one on pure maths with mechanics, and one on pure maths with statistics.
Students who got a 7 or 8 at GCSE can still struggle in the first term. We rebuild algebra skills early, then work through each topic with exam questions. See our A-Level tutoring page and our guide to the GCSE to A-Level Maths jump.
Why small groups rather than one-to-one?
Small groups give your child individual attention at a price most families can manage. With 3–5 students, the tutor can check every student's working, while students learn from each other's questions. Our guide on group tutoring vs one-to-one compares both honestly.
One Barking parent, Ayesha P. from East Ham, told us: "My son went from a grade 3 to a 7 in Maths."
How LCB can help
If your child is falling behind in Maths, or aiming for a top grade, the first step is the same: book a free assessment. We will tell you where your child is now, what grade is realistic, and which plan fits. Plans run monthly with no contract, and you can see every price on our pricing page. Lessons run at our Barking centre or online.
Questions parents ask
- Can my child do Maths only, or must they take other subjects too?
- Maths on its own is fine. The Essential plan gives one Maths lesson a week, and you can add English or Science later on a bigger plan.
- Do you help with Maths homework?
- Lessons follow a planned course, but tutors are happy to go through homework topics your child is stuck on, because these are usually the gaps we need to fix anyway.
- My child is in Year 9. Is that too early for GCSE Maths tuition?
- No. Year 9 is a good time to close gaps before the GCSE course speeds up. KS3 students join the same GCSE and KS3 plans, at the same prices.
- Do you teach Further Maths?
- Please ask us at your free assessment. We will tell you honestly whether we have a suitable group and tutor for your child's course.
